New Metal Foam armor not only stops bullets, but destroys them

Scientists from North Carolina State University have come up with a new kind of metal foam armor that has the capability of disintegrating bullets upon impact. The new kind of armor has been designed by the scientists using a special kind of metal foam that makes it extremely light to wear. Recently a video was released showing off the new technology. The video clearly shows that the armor is completely capable of destroying bullets by turning them into dust. The metal foam armor has been created by the scientists using composite metal forms better known as CMFs.

The armor is basically a mixture of ceramic strike face, a middle layer of CMF and a Kevlar backing. The scientists have been researching on CMFs for quite some years now and that is when they found out about the incredible strength that these CMFs have. In the demonstration video, the scientists used a 7.62 x 63mm M2 armor piercing projectile. The firing in the video was based out of the Department of Justice’s protocols.

According to Afsaneh Rabiei, a mechanical and aerospace engineering professor at the North Carolina State University, “We could stop the bullet at a total thickness of less than an inch, while the indentation on the back was less than 8 millimeters”.

Many enthusiasts suggest that apart from the much obvious use of the CMF based armor in law enforcement and military purposes, it can also be used for space travel and even used to carry nuclear waste. The additional benefits of the CMFs are the facts that they can withstand immense high temperatures and radiations like X-rays, gamma rays and neutrons. More can be stated about the implications of CMFs after detailed study in this regard.
