Microsoft Edge is an incorporated browser present in the Windows 10 operating system. The company has voluntarily killed its Internet Explorer 11 to boost the user’s engagement with the new Microsoft Edge browser. But, incapability of Microsoft Edge browser made the users to opt out for the same and go to another web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and other major browsers.
But, Microsoft came up with a new plan, which enables the users to install extensions in the Microsoft Edge Browser. Yes, now users can add their favorite add-on in the Microsoft browser.
In the latest preview build from Microsoft for Windows 10, it allows the insiders to add extensions in the Microsoft Edge Browser. Initially, only three extensions were available for the browser and now, Insiders can install extensions such as Mouse Gestures, Reddit Enhancement Suite and Microsoft Translator in their browser. The extensions are currently available for only Insiders and the company has mentioned that, soon it will release more extensions for Microsoft Edge Browser.
General Manager of Edge program, Drew DeBruyne has mentioned in Windows Experience Blog as follows,
To ensure the highest quality experience for customers, and as we have done with Windows 10 since the beginning, we will introduce extensions first to our Windows Insiders and then roll them out more broadly to all Windows 10 users. Initially our Insiders will download and then sideload extensions for testing purposes, but ultimately we will make extensions available to all of our customers via the Windows Store to ensure the quality of the end-to-end experience.
In the meanwhile, the company is strictly monitored in releasing extensions for the Microsoft Edge Browser. Poorly written or any other dangerous code might decrease the performance of the browser and also it might create security issues for the operating system. He also mentioned that these extensions are first and foremost step taken by them and he assured that in a few months more extension will be added in order to provide efficient browsing experience for the users.
Apart from this, the company has also mentioned a few points regarding Windows 10 mobile applications,
- Outlook calendar will stop supporting tasks
- Indoor Maps will be not available for a few locations
